Leviathan's meta in the first half of the year

ree

Hello, my fellow Leviathaners. This year is proving to be a challenge, both in terms of format management for the committee and in maintaining the pace of play, to keep up with all the changes and new cards Magic itself is going through

The first announcement this year was to remove Tamiyo from the format before it became a bigger problem. In return, Rofellos was released as a playable Commander. This announcement personally pleased me greatly, having seen Rofellos several times this year during my games.

The second announcement was simple, yet controversial: Gold Boarders are now available for use. I personally believe that in the long run, this will increase access to expensive cards at more affordable prices, just as Pre-Modern did, a good example to follow.

I'll leave the third announcement for later in the year, considering it only came out in month 7. (It's coming soon.)

In terms of games, this has been an excellent year for me. I've been trying out several different Commanders. Most recently, Vivi and Stella Lee, which I've had more fun with than I've had with a new deck in a long time. Please, tell us what new things you've been playing, hit me up at Discord

Regarding numbers, this year we will present the analyses that I have already prepared throughout the year so that I can talk a little

OVERALL META DISTRIBUTION

ree

Here are some points of note: this is the first time we're missing some favorites, Aminatou, Leovold, and Ragavan are worth noticing. Meanwhile, brand-new entrants like Ketramose occupy a previously nonexistent BW Midrange spot, which is very pleasing. Eris, who came out of nowhere last year and quickly forced her way to the top of the 2024 list, is now again very well positioned, along with Ghyrson, who didn't make the list in 2024, making my inner Izzet very happy. Another highlight is an old acquaintance appearing in this top 10, Edric, with a strong performance, inspiring other Simic Tempo decks. And finally, we have the overwhelming presence of Kroxa, who has been climbing the ranks since 2023 and is now finally at the top.

PERFORMANCE RATING

ree

To talk about performance, let's use the ratio "Number of times the Commander made to top 4 divided by the number of times the Commander was played."

This way, we can judge each Commander's individual performance relative to the overall Meta.

  • Among the Hidden Gems, I want to point out that Ertai has been hidding since last year, with an excellent Top 4 rate.

  • In Competitive, Elminster has the best percentage among the most played decks, being the villain of many local Metas, while Kroxa has an overwhelming presence everywhere, with a very good conversion rate. New additions are Ketramose and the old-new Edric.

  • Among the Fan Favorites are Eris, Ghyrson, Aragorn, Yoshimaru + Rograkh, which, despite their low conversion rate to the top 4, are true terrors and much loved by players.

MOST USED INDIVIDUAL CARDS

ree

New this year, thanks to the help of another local player, we can now discuss the cards from the 99 in the decks. So please post your lists on Moxfield and send them along when submitting the report, so we can gather more data.

My only observation, I found it curious, is that, green only appears in the form of Mana Dorks. Mostly on Creatures, but among other card types, it only appears in Wild Growth and Utopia Sprawl, which are also basically Mana Dorks. The other colors have well-defined functions, but with some variation. Expect to see me talk more about this later in the year.

TOP 10 MOST PLAYED COMMANDERS

ree

And finally, we have our detailed list of the Top 10 most played of the first half of the year. I know the month of July alone turned everything upside down, but I'll save that for the end of the semester, so we can see the changes it brought. Overall, we are very excited about this year on Leviathan and we hope to see it grow.

Good gaming, everyone!
